   It is a viewpoint where we can appreciate the Galapagos sharks resting thanks to the marine currents that converge in this unique geological formation.
4. The Cracks

  Places to Visit:

  • Bartolome Island:Named in honor of Sir Bartholomew Sulivan of the British Navy. It has an area of ​​1.2 km² and a maximum altitude of 114 meters. This island offers some of the most beautiful landscapes of the archipelago. The island is composed of an extinct volcano and a variety of red, orange, green and bright black volcanic formations. The lava cactus of the Galapagos colonize the new lava fields. On this island is the famous Pinnacle, which is one of the most representative places of the archipelago. Here you can dive and snorkel with penguins, sea lions, white tip reef sharks and other tropical fish. Seasonally, Bartolomé is the mating and nesting site of the green turtle. The bay is also an excellent place to go swimming. The twin bays are separated by a narrow isthmus.
  • Sullivan Bay: This unique landscape is composed of a pair of eroded scoria lava cones which were engulfed by a recent (in geological terms) pahoehoe lava flow and which is considered one of the finest in the world.

Santa Fe Island

We will meet at Puerto Ayora’s pier early in the morning, beginning the adventure and heading toward Santa Fe Island. Once we have embarked on the Galaxy Daily, we will sail for a couple of hours, during which we will enjoy the view and the soft Galapagos Sea breeze.

During this day of adventure, we will also be able to appreciate the largest species of opuntia cactus and the Galapagos hawk (the largest predator on the island), the blue-footed booby, the Galapagos sea lion, the magnificent frigate birds, and the marine iguana, also known as the Galapagos dragon due to its peculiar appearance.

The landing in Santa Fe will be wet, so we will have to jump on the impressive white sand beach. Several sea lions will immediately receive us, inviting us to start a walk to look for the resident species of Santa Fe.

Once the walk is over, we can enjoy a swim in the Encañada. Here, we can snorkel and observe sea turtles, rays, sea lions, and colorful fish while swimming in this island’s warm, crystalline waters.

In this itinerary, we will enjoy a delicious lunch on board the Galaxy Daily before a short rest and later navigation back to Santa Cruz Island.

Places to Visit:

• Tunnels: This is one of the most spectacular snorkeling sites in Isabela, the water is shallow, calm, and very clear, a marine sanctuary. A series of lava flows have produced unique geological formations, a series of arches and tunnels, below and above the water, where a large number of endemic Galapagos species live. The entrance to the site is not deep and the waves can be very strong, for this reason, access to this place is not always very feasible. The best time to visit Los Túneles is between January and May.

Places to Visit:

• Wetlands: The Wetlands of Isabela Island are located just outside of Puerto Villamil. The Wetlands consist of lagoons, swamps, and mangroves and are home to a variety of unique bird species such as common stilts, whimbrels, white-cheeked pintails, and gallinules. The Wetlands can be visited on foot via a path that winds through the swamps.

• Flamingo Lake: To the west of Puerto Villamil there are various salt and brackish lagoons which house an impressive variety of coastal and sea birds. Here, visitors can also find the largest concentration of flamingos in Galapagos.

• Arnaldo Tupiza Breeding Center: The Tortoise Breeding Center (also known as the Interpretation Center) is located nearby Puerto Villamil. A boardwalk connects the town to the Center, stretching across the wetlands and Prickly Pear Cacti shrub. Five sub-species of the Giant Tortoise exist on the island, yet their populations are threatened by introduced animals such as goats and cats. At the Tortoise Breeding Center, eggs are nursed in a hatchery and the giant tortoise adults are observed in supervised corrals. The Center aims to increase the population and secure the survival of these species.

• Tintoreras: The Tintoreras Islets, located a short distance from Puerto Villamil, is home to a great variety of wildlife. Its turquoise, crystalline waters are inhabited by white-tipped reef sharks, Galapagos penguins, marine turtles and sea lions. One of its beaches, surrounded by mangroves is one of the few sites where marine iguanas can reproduce successfully.

Floreana:

This day tour to Floreana Island starts at 6:30 AM with a short walk to the pier of Puerto Ayora, from where a local aquatic taxi will take us to the first class Galapagos Element Wind Speed Yacht with which we will start sailing to the small town of Puerto Velasco Ibarra located on Floreana Island. With little luck and during the navigation, we may be able to observe marine turtles, manta rays, several species of marine birds and perhaps
whales. Once we arrive at Pto. Velasco Ibarra, a local water taxi will transport us from the speed
boat to the pier of the town. There, we will have great chances to meet sea lions and marine iguanas enjoying the morning sun! Then, we will take a
local transportation known as “Chiva” and start a 30-minute ride up to the highlands of Floreana Island. The chiva will ascend following a mud road surrounded by typical dry vegetation of the coastal area. Later, as we ascend, it will transform into a lush, green vegetation. In this area, we also
find some farms with plantations of bananas, coffee, cocoa, and other tropical plantations. Our short drive will end at the “pampada” from where we start a nice walk that permits us to observe the typical flora of the area. On our way, we will also encounter some giant Galapagos tortoises. They
are very sensible and shy, so when we approach them, they will immediately hide into their carapaces. It is very important not to touch or feed these amazing animals. Our walk will continue until we reach a rocky area at base of the hill and where we find the place known as “Asilo de la Paz”
(Peace Asylum), a historical place where the German Wittmer family settled down when they arrived to Floreana in 1932. During our walk we will observe the caves they used as their home before moving to the place which is now known as Puerto Velasco Ibarra. The whole ambiance of
Asilo de la Paz is of complete tranquility, with a landscape of exuberant green vegetation, and if weather permits, we can enjoy awesome views of the surrounding hills and perhaps of the Pacific Ocean. After this visit, we descend to the point where we meet the chiva which will transport us
back to town where we will enjoy a lunch prepared in a small, local restaurant. After a short rest, we go for a 1 km walk to the place known as “La Loberia”, a bay of beautiful scenery. The main attraction of this place is the presence of a small colony of sea lions (Zalophus
Wollebacki). There is also a great chance to observe marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus Cristatus) resting on the rocky areas. In the water of the bay, we will be able to observe marine turtles (Chelonia Midas Agazzisi). We will also have time to spend snorkeling, or just taking pictures and
then we return for some free time before boarding the Yacht for our navigation back to the city of Puerto Ayora.

South Plazas:

SOUTH PLAZAS & CARRION POINT

AM – South Plazas

Plazas, as many call it, has an incredible landscape, and on our arrival to it, we will have a dry landing while sea lions welcome us at the shore. We will begin our walk along a path through an Opuntia Cactus forest.
Continuing our tour, we will reach the fantastic, windy cliff where red-billed tropical birds, swallow-tailed gulls, brown pelicans, and the impressive frigate bird usually fly around. The trail meanders along the edge of the ridge for a few hundred meters.

PM – Carrion Point

After our lunch onboard the Galaxy Daily, we will discover the Galapagos marine fauna while snorkeling. With some luck, we will see white-tip sharks and a great variety of fish, sea turtles, and rays.
After this journey, we will return to the Itabaca Channel, where a bus will be waiting for us to take us to Puerto Ayora’s pier, where the adventure of this day ends.

Santa Cruz Island to Baltra Airport, Arrive to Quito

Places to Visit:

• Twin Craters: The Twin Craters are, in fact, not craters. These impressive holes were formed by magma (lava) domes which hardened on the outside but continued to flow on the inside, leaving huge but empty chambers that collapsed with the passing of time, creating this breathtaking scenery that resembles two pit crates. The Twins are located in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island and are surrounded by lush and green forests, dominated by the endemic Scalesia plants. It is possible to walk along the rim of the craters to better appreciate the magnitude of the holes as well as the local flora and fauna. This site is also one of the most likely places to observe the endemic short-ear owl of the Galapagos.
